It has been awhile... Sorry I am not dead

Traveling…

Sorry for the update, I have been traveling the last 6 months and integrating acquisitions for the company. This means I haven’t had a lot of time, let alone time to even write. That being said the European team championships is coming up in Mid August and I can't wait to head to Switzerland. This year should be great as we came close the year before for first time at this type of event. We learned a lot and we have applied it into our games in the US. I hope this year at come back with a medal of some sorts.

I have dropped playing Guard and let one of my other team mates play it this year while I went for an army that needed a adaptable play style and one that I have truly loved since they have ever came out. This year I am bringing Black Templar’s and an unorthodox list which will hopefully take everyone by surprise.

Here is the list Rolling Thunder:

Fast Attack: Land Speeder Squadron (2#, 140 pts)
2 Land Speeder Squadron, 140 pts = 2 * 50 (base cost 50) + Typhoon Missile Launcher x2 40

Transport 1 1 Drop Pod, 30 pts
Transport 2: 1 Drop Pod, 30 pts
Transport 3: 1 Rhino, 53 pts Smoke launchers 3pts

I am not going to go into how the list plays but it’s a lot of fun and I have had a lot of enjoyment out of this list. It makes me think every time and it’s an engaging list from the opponent’s perspective. I feel like I am actually playing a game again unlike I did with the Guard, where I picked this unit shot it, picked this unit shot it… again and again. If this list goes well I am going to adapt it and look to bring it to the circuit next year as I feel Dark Eldar especially the Dark Eldar list builds I have been messing with are too unpredictable on anti tank shots and are effected by dice rolls.

  3. Cool. Your DE look too nice and distinctive to get divorced. :) Good luck at ETC!

  4. Glad to see you alive and kicking again.
Hopefully, our teams will meet in a grand finale after both of us crushing Poland and Germany.

I know it's Bushido Red Panda that's painting your Templars, but the Dark Eldar were all yours, right?

I wondered if you could elabarate on this point ? Do you mean that just using loads of dark lances and blasters is umpredicatable because they lack AP1 and need a good dice roll to get a penetrating hit. This means you sometimes get lucky and blow up a good number of vehicles in a turn and sometimes the whole army kills not a single vehicle. Would adding reavers with heat lances help ? Or are you considering charging into stationery gunlines with the likes of grotesques with 2 pain tokens, baron with hellions, or beastmasters ?

  6. Rathstar, it's because you only have blasters and dark lances as your true anti tank and they are only good as a missile launcher. You have a 7% chance for each blaster to destroy a tank. The problem is you don't have a lot of weapons on any one platform but a lot of single shots which means you are rolling single dice odds and not stacking a lot of shots on one unit (applied force). They have no up or down roll on the damage chart which is what they need.

Now that being said Reavers don't cut it. The Str 6 heat lance is horrible unless its for one shot. Them making the lance only str 6 makes it useless against vehicles outside the 9 inch range band. When you get close to use the Reavers there is a high probability against good players that they are in threat to be taking out and your trading one for one which you can't do for DE.

You need other options to deal with mech and there is nothing in the book that can help you out besides relying on dice rolls.

  7. Completely agree here.
Real melta or other ap1 would really make a lot of difference with DE.
When your dice are having a bad day, even killing a single chimera can be as futile as throwing paper planes to break down a brick wall.

Being the Swedish Dark Eldar player, I do infact agree on your analysis to not use Dark Eldar at all and instead opt for more stable lists with staying power.
Dark Eldar are extremely fun to play, but always a gamble and very unforgiving when it starts to go downhill.

Good thing the Dark Eldar at least are blessed with beautiful models.

  8. haha, the title of this article made me wonder if you're apologizing for it being a while, or apologizing for not being dead.

    :-p

I personally use Hellions w/ FNP + FC for a little extra (and somewhat dependable) anti-mech. It's done me well thus far at least, but you know me... I'm crazy.
